Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai

Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, born in 1690, is celebrated as the greatest poet of the Sindhi language and a revered mystic of the Sufi tradition. His literary masterpiece, Shah Jo Risalo, is hailed as the pinnacle of Sindhi literature, showcasing his profound spiritual insights and poetic brilliance. Bhittai's works have transcended linguistic barriers, making him the most translated poet from Sindh, with translations available in English and all major Pakistani languages.

Originating from a Kazmi Sayyid family in Hala Haweli, near modern-day Hala, Bhittai spent his formative years in the town of Kotri Mughal. At the tender age of twenty, he embarked on a transformative journey across Sindh and its neighboring regions, where he encountered various mystics and Jogis. This rich tapestry of experiences significantly influenced his poetry, which reflects deep spiritual themes and a quest for divine love.

After three years of travel, Bhittai returned home and entered into marriage with an aristocratic family, though he faced the tragedy of widowhood shortly thereafter, choosing not to remarry. His unwavering piety and spirituality garnered him a devoted following, while also attracting some hostility. In his later years, he settled in Bhit (Bhit Shah), where he continued to inspire others until his passing in 1752. A mausoleum was erected over his grave, which has since become a prominent pilgrimage site.

Bhittai's poetry, meticulously compiled by his disciples in Shah Jo Risalo, was first published in eighteen sixty-six. Since then, numerous translations in Urdu and English have emerged, further solidifying his legacy. His verses resonate deeply with the people of Sindh, and he is affectionately known by various honorifics, including Lakhino Latif, Latif Ghot, Bhittai, and Bhit Jo Shah.
