Shajar al-Durr

Shajar al-Durr, known as the 'Tree of Pearls', was a remarkable ruler of Egypt who emerged from humble beginnings. Born of Turkic origin, she initially lived as a child slave before becoming the concubine of As-Salih Ayyub, the Ayyubid sultan. Her journey from servitude to power is a testament to her resilience and intelligence.

Following the death of her first husband during the tumultuous Seventh Crusade, Shajar al-Durr took on a pivotal role in the political landscape of Egypt. On the second of May in the year one thousand two hundred fifty, she ascended to the throne as the sultana of Egypt, marking a significant transition from the Ayyubid dynasty to the Mamluk era.

Her marriage to Izz al-Din Aybak, the first sultan of the Mamluk Bahri dynasty, further solidified her influence in the region. Shajar al-Durr's reign was characterized by her strategic acumen and her ability to navigate the complexities of power during a time of great upheaval.
