Shang Yang

Shang Yang, originally surnamed Gongsun, was a prominent chancellor and reformer during the early Warring States period in ancient China. Born in the Zhou vassal state of Wey in three hundred ninety BCE, he later migrated to Wei before ultimately finding his political calling in the State of Qin in three hundred fifty-nine BCE.

As Qin's chief minister for two decades, Shang Yang implemented a series of groundbreaking reforms that transformed the state's administrative, political, and economic structures. His visionary policies laid the groundwork for Qin's eventual conquest of the other six rival states, leading to the unification of China under centralized rule for the first time during the Qin dynasty.

Scholars regard Shang Yang as one of the most influential statesmen of his time, with his contributions likely extending to The Book of Lord Shang, a significant text that encapsulates his philosophical and political ideas. His legacy continues to resonate in discussions of governance and statecraft.
