Sharmila Rege

Sharmila Rege, born on October seventh, nineteen sixty-four, was a prominent Indian sociologist and feminist scholar whose work significantly impacted gender studies in India. She was the author of the influential book 'Writing Caste, Writing Gender,' which explored the intersections of caste and gender in Indian society.

Since nineteen ninety-one, Rege led the Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Women's Studies Centre at the University of Pune, where she dedicated her career to advancing the field of gender studies. Her leadership and scholarship inspired many students and scholars alike, fostering a deeper understanding of gender issues in the context of Indian culture.

In recognition of her distinguished contributions to development studies, she received the Malcolm Adiseshiah award from the Madras Institute of Development Studies in two thousand six. This accolade underscored her commitment to social justice and her impactful research.

Tragically, Sharmila Rege passed away on July thirteenth, two thousand thirteen, after a battle with colon cancer. Her legacy continues to influence feminist scholarship and sociological discourse in India.
