Shay Given, born on April 20, 1976, is a celebrated Irish former professional footballer renowned for his exceptional skills as a goalkeeper. Regarded as one of Ireland's greatest players, he holds the distinction of being the second-most capped player for the Republic of Ireland, with an impressive total of 134 caps, surpassed only by Robbie Keane.
Given's football journey began at Celtic, although he did not make a first-team appearance there. In 1994, he transferred to Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer, where he gained valuable experience on loan at Sunderland and Swindon Town, contributing to their respective title victories in the Football League. His career took a significant turn in 1997 when he signed with Newcastle United for a fee of two and a half million pounds, becoming a key player in the team that reached the FA Cup finals in 1998 and 1999.
During his time at Newcastle, Given was recognized for his outstanding performances, earning spots in the Premier League Team of the Season for both the 2001–02 and 2005–06 seasons. He also showcased his talent in European competitions, participating in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup. In February 2009, he made a move to Manchester City for six million pounds, followed by a transfer to Aston Villa in July 2011 for a fee believed to be around three and a half million pounds. His final playing years were spent at Stoke City, where he retired after two seasons.
On the international stage, Given made his debut for Ireland in 1996 and played a pivotal role in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, helping the team reach the knockout stage. He was present during the controversial play-off against France for the 2010 World Cup and played a crucial part in Ireland's qualification for UEFA Euro 2012. Although he was selected for UEFA Euro 2016, he did not feature in any matches. Given announced his retirement from international football in July 2016, leaving behind a legacy of 134 caps and 52 clean sheets.
