Shayne Gostisbehere, born on April 20, 1993, in Pembroke Pines, Florida, is a talented American professional ice hockey player currently serving as a defenseman for the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League (NHL). His journey in hockey began with the youth affiliate of the Florida Panthers, where he honed his skills before transferring to South Kent School in Connecticut during high school.
Gostisbehere's collegiate career flourished at Union College in Schenectady, New York, where he played three seasons with the Union Dutchmen. His remarkable performance helped lead the team to its first NCAA championship title in 2014, earning him the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award and a spot as a finalist for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award. Additionally, he contributed to the United States national junior team, securing a gold medal at the 2013 World Junior Championships.
Selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Gostisbehere signed an entry-level contract with the team in 2014. Despite facing challenges, including an ACL tear that sidelined him for most of the 2014-15 season, he rebounded with a record-breaking rookie season, achieving a 15-game point streak—the longest for any rookie defenseman in NHL history. His accolades included being the youngest Flyer to win the Barry Ashbee Trophy for best team defenseman and a runner-up for the Calder Memorial Trophy.
However, injuries began to plague Gostisbehere's career, particularly a recurring knee issue that started in October 2019. Despite these setbacks, he continued to demonstrate resilience, undergoing multiple surgeries and helping the Flyers advance in the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs. After a challenging season in 2021, he was traded to the Arizona Coyotes due to salary cap constraints. On July 1, 2024, he signed a three-year contract worth nine million six hundred thousand dollars with the Carolina Hurricanes, marking a new chapter in his professional journey.
