Sherman Alexie

Sherman Joseph Alexie Jr., born on October 7, 1966, is a prominent Spokane novelist, poet, screenwriter, and filmmaker. His literary works are deeply influenced by his experiences as an Indigenous American, drawing from his rich ancestry that spans several tribes. Raised on the Spokane Indian Reservation, Alexie now resides in Seattle, Washington, where he continues to create impactful narratives.

Among his most celebrated works is the semi-autobiographical young adult novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, published in two thousand seven. This book not only won the U.S. National Book Award for Young People's Literature but also received the Odyssey Award for the best audiobook for young people in two thousand eight, which he narrated himself.

In addition to his acclaimed novel, Alexie authored The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven in nineteen ninety-three, a collection of short stories that was later adapted into the film Smoke Signals in nineteen ninety-eight, for which he penned the screenplay. His debut novel, Reservation Blues, earned him the American Book Award in nineteen ninety-six, further establishing his reputation as a significant voice in contemporary literature.
