Sherraine Schalm

Sherraine Schalm, born on June 21, 1975, in Brooks, Alberta, is a distinguished former Canadian épée fencer whose remarkable career has left an indelible mark on the sport. A graduate of the University of Ottawa, she has not only excelled in fencing but has also made significant contributions as an elementary school teacher and author.

Schalm's fencing prowess was highlighted at the 2005 World Fencing Championships, where she made history by winning a bronze medal in the individual épée event, becoming the first Canadian to achieve this feat. The following season, she clinched the overall World Cup title, solidifying her status as one of the top fencers in the world.

Throughout her career, Schalm has represented Canada at four Summer Olympics. In the 2000 and 2004 Games, she finished 19th and 18th in the individual events, respectively, and narrowly missed a medal with a fourth-place finish in the team event. Her Olympic journey continued in 2008, where she was seeded ninth but faced an early exit in the second round. At the 2012 Olympics, she reached the last thirty-two before being defeated by South Korean fencer Shin A-lam.

In addition to her athletic achievements, Schalm published a memoir titled 'Running With Swords' in 2005, under her married name, Sherraine MacKay. With four Pan American Games medals to her name, she has set the benchmark for Canadian women fencers at both the world championships and the Olympic Games. Schalm retired from competitive fencing in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and inspiration.
