Sherri Howard, born on June first, nineteen sixty-two, is a distinguished former American athlete and actor, renowned for her remarkable achievements in the 400 meters. She made history at the tender age of sixteen by competing in the 1980 Olympic trials, where she and her younger sister Denean, who was fourteen, became the first sisters to qualify for an Olympic team in the same event for the United States, finishing first and third respectively.
Despite the political boycott of the 1980 Olympics by President Jimmy Carter, which overshadowed their accomplishments, Sherri and Denean continued to excel in athletics. Their perseverance paid off when they both secured spots on the U.S. team for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. There, Sherri contributed to her team's gold medal victory in the 4 × 400 meters relay alongside notable athletes such as Valerie Brisco-Hooks and Chandra Cheesborough.
In the subsequent 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea, Sherri earned a silver medal as part of the U.S. 4 × 400 meters relay team. Although she ran in the early rounds, her sister Denean took the final leg, helping the team achieve one of the fastest relay times in history, surpassed only by the Soviet team.
Sherri's athletic prowess was evident early on, as she and her three sisters gained national attention in nineteen seventy-nine by setting a still-standing National High School record in the 4 × 440 yard relay for San Gorgonio High School. She was honored as the California High School Athlete of the Year in nineteen eighty and was named the national Girl's High School Athlete of the Year by Track and Field News the same year. Sherri also set the NFHS national high school record in the 440 yard dash at fifty-three point sixty-five seconds.
In addition to her impressive high school career, Sherri won the NCAA Championship in nineteen eighty-five while representing California State University, Los Angeles, and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in nineteen ninety-two, solidifying her legacy in the world of athletics.
