Shigeru Umebayashi, born on February 19, 1951, is a distinguished Japanese composer renowned for his contributions to film music. Initially, he made his mark as the leader and bass player of the new wave rock band EX, which was pivotal in Japan's music scene during its time. However, following the band's disbandment in 1985, Umebayashi transitioned into the world of film scoring, where he has since left an indelible mark.
With a prolific career spanning decades, Umebayashi has composed over thirty film scores for both Japanese and Chinese cinema. His work is characterized by its emotional depth and innovative soundscapes, making him a sought-after composer in the industry.
Perhaps his most recognized piece in the West is "Yumeji's Theme," originally featured in Seijun Suzuki's film Yumeji. This haunting melody gained further acclaim when it was included in Wong Kar-wai's critically acclaimed film, In the Mood for Love, released in two thousand. Umebayashi's collaboration with Wong Kar-wai continued with the film 2046 in two thousand four, as well as the visually stunning House of Flying Daggers.
