Shimon Peres

Shimon Peres, born on August second, nineteen twenty-three, was a prominent Israeli politician and statesman whose career spanned an impressive seventy years. He served as the prime minister of Israel during two terms, from nineteen eighty-four to nineteen eighty-six and again from nineteen ninety-five to nineteen ninety-six. Additionally, he held the esteemed position of president of Israel from two thousand seven until two thousand fourteen, marking him as a significant figure in the nation's history.

Peres was a member of twelve cabinets and represented five political parties throughout his extensive political journey. Elected to the Knesset in November nineteen fifty-nine, he maintained a continuous presence in the Knesset until his election as president in two thousand seven, with only a brief hiatus in early two thousand six. His remarkable tenure of forty-eight years, including an uninterrupted stretch of over forty-six years, made him the longest-serving member in the Knesset's history.

From a young age, Peres was recognized for his exceptional oratory skills and was mentored by David Ben-Gurion, Israel's founding father. His political career began in the late nineteen forties, where he held various diplomatic and military roles during and after the nineteen forty-eight Arab-Israeli War. By the age of twenty-eight, he had already attained the position of deputy director general of defense, later becoming director general from nineteen fifty-three to nineteen fifty-nine.

In nineteen fifty-six, Peres played a crucial role in the negotiations of the Protocol of Sèvres, which was lauded by British Prime Minister Anthony Eden as a pinnacle of statesmanship. His negotiations with U.S. President John F. Kennedy in nineteen sixty-three led to the historic sale of Hawk anti-aircraft missiles to Israel, marking the first instance of U.S. military equipment being sold to the nation. Throughout his career, he represented various political factions, including Mapai, Rafi, the Alignment, Labor, and Kadima, and led both the Alignment and Labor parties.

Peres briefly succeeded Yitzhak Rabin as acting prime minister in nineteen seventy-seven before his official tenure as prime minister. As foreign minister under Rabin, he was instrumental in the 1994 Israel-Jordan peace treaty and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year alongside Rabin and Yasser Arafat for their efforts in the Oslo Accords peace talks. In nineteen ninety-six, he established the Peres Center for Peace, dedicated to fostering lasting peace and cooperation in the Middle East. Peres passed away in two thousand sixteen at Sheba Medical Center after suffering a stroke.
