Shing-Tung Yau

Shing-Tung Yau, a distinguished Chinese-American mathematician, was born in Shantou in nineteen forty-nine. He relocated to British Hong Kong during his early years and later moved to the United States in nineteen sixty-nine. Yau has made significant contributions to the fields of mathematics and science, serving as the director of the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center at Tsinghua University and as a professor emeritus at Harvard University.

Throughout his illustrious career, Yau was the William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics at Harvard until two thousand twenty-two, when he transitioned to Tsinghua University. His groundbreaking work in partial differential equations, the Calabi conjecture, the positive energy theorem, and the Monge–Ampère equation earned him the prestigious Fields Medal in nineteen eighty-two, solidifying his status as a leading figure in modern differential geometry and geometric analysis.

Yau's influence extends beyond pure mathematics, impacting various fields such as convex geometry, algebraic geometry, enumerative geometry, mirror symmetry, general relativity, and string theory. His research has also made significant contributions to applied mathematics, engineering, and numerical analysis, showcasing the breadth and depth of his expertise.
