Shinran, born on May fourteenth, eleven seventy-three, emerged as a pivotal figure in Japanese Buddhism during the Kamakura Period. He is celebrated as the founder of the Jōdo Shinshū school, which represents a significant evolution in Pure Land Buddhism. As a disciple of Hōnen, the originator of the Japanese Pure Land movement, Shinran developed a unique interpretation that emphasized unwavering faith and complete reliance on the compassionate power of Amida Buddha.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, who adhered strictly to monastic life, Shinran lived as a married Buddhist teacher. He often described himself as
