Shitao

Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji in 1642, was a remarkable figure in Chinese art and spirituality, emerging from the imperial lineage of the Ming dynasty. His early life was marked by turmoil as he narrowly escaped the fall of the Ming dynasty in 1644, a fate that could have sealed his destiny as a member of the royal family. Instead, he embraced a new path, becoming a Buddhist monk by 1651 and adopting the name Yuanji Shitao.

His journey took him from Wuchang, where he began his religious studies, to Anhui in the 1660s. Shitao's artistic talents flourished during his time in Nanjing and Yangzhou throughout the 1680s. In 1690, he moved to Beijing in search of patronage to advance his position within the monastic community, but his efforts were met with frustration.

In 1693, disillusioned by his inability to secure support, Shitao converted to Daoism and returned to Yangzhou, where he spent the remainder of his life. His later years were notable, including an encounter with the Kangxi Emperor during a visit to Yangzhou, which underscored his significance in the cultural landscape of the time. Shitao passed away in 1707, leaving behind a legacy as a painter, poet, and art theorist.
