Shushanik

Shushanik, also known as Shushanika or Vardandukht, was a remarkable Christian Armenian woman born around the year four hundred forty. She is best remembered for her unwavering faith and the tragic circumstances surrounding her martyrdom. Shushanik was the daughter of the esteemed military commander Vardan Mamikonian and became the consort of Varsken, a ruler of the Mihranid dynasty.

Her life took a harrowing turn when her husband, Varsken, who had renounced Christianity in favor of Zoroastrianism, demanded that she abandon her faith. Shushanik's refusal to comply with his orders led to her imprisonment and subsequent torture in the town of Tsurtavi, Georgia. Her steadfast resistance to the cruelty inflicted upon her is chronicled in the hagiographic work of her confessor, Jacob, which stands as the oldest known piece of Georgian literature.

Shushanik's martyrdom is a poignant testament to her commitment to her beliefs, ultimately leading to her death at the hands of her husband. This act of defiance against oppression has earned her a revered place in the hearts of many. Following her death, Varsken himself met his end at the hands of King Vakhtang I Gorgasali in the year four hundred eighty-two.

In recognition of her sacrifice, Shushanik has been canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church and is venerated by the Armenian Apostolic Church. Her feast day is celebrated on October seventeenth in Georgia and on the Tuesday between September twentieth and twenty-sixth in Armenia, marking her enduring legacy as a symbol of faith and resilience.
