Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Siaka Stevens

Siaka Stevens, born on August twenty-fourth, nineteen oh five, was a prominent politician who led Sierra Leone from nineteen sixty-seven to nineteen eighty-five. His tenure as Prime Minister spanned from nineteen sixty-seven to nineteen seventy-one, after which he assumed the presidency until his retirement in nineteen eighty-five. Stevens' leadership style was marked by patrimonial rule, characterized by violence and self-indulgence, as he consolidated power through corruption and exploitation.

In nineteen sixty-seven, Stevens and his All People's Congress (APC) party emerged victorious in a closely contested general election against the incumbent Prime Minister, Sir Albert Margai of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP). By April nineteen seventy-one, he transformed Sierra Leone into a republic, becoming president just a day after the new constitution was ratified by the Sierra Leone Parliament. Although often regarded as the first president of Sierra Leone, he was technically the second, following Christopher Okoro Cole, who served briefly before resigning.

Stevens played a significant role on the continental stage, serving as Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) from July first, nineteen eighty to June twenty-fourth, nineteen eighty-one. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Mano River Union, an economic alliance between Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. His influence extended beyond national borders, showcasing his commitment to regional cooperation.

Upon retiring from office on November twenty-eighth, nineteen eighty-five, Stevens had carefully orchestrated his succession by pressuring potential successors to withdraw, ultimately selecting Major-General Joseph Saidu Momoh, the commander of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces, as his successor. Siaka Stevens passed away on May twenty-ninth, nineteen eighty-eight, in Freetown, leaving behind a complex legacy as a pragmatic socialist.
