Siarhei Rutenka

Siarhei Rutenka, born on August 29, 1981, is a distinguished Belarusian former professional handball player who made significant contributions to the sport. He not only represented Belarus but also embraced Slovenian citizenship in 2003 and later acquired Spanish nationality in January 2008. His versatility on the court allowed him to excel in various positions, primarily as an outside left, while also demonstrating skills as a pivot and playmaker.

Rutenka gained prominence during his tenure with the Slovenian club RK Celje, following an earlier stint at RK Gorenje. His remarkable talent caught the attention of FC Barcelona, which secured his services for a transfer fee of one million euros in 2009. This move marked a significant milestone in his career, allowing him to compete at the highest levels of European handball.

His prowess was particularly evident during the 2006 European Men's Handball Championship, where he emerged as the top goalscorer while representing Slovenia. In recognition of his exceptional performance, he was honored as the best left-back of the year in 2013. Rutenka's legacy in the sport was further solidified when he was inducted into the European Handball Federation Hall of Fame in 2023.

Beyond his individual accolades, Siarhei Rutenka is also known for being the older brother of fellow handball player Dzianis Rutenka, showcasing a family legacy in the sport.
