Siddhartha Mukherjee

Siddhartha Mukherjee, born on July twenty-first, nineteen seventy, is a distinguished Indian physician, biologist, and author renowned for his contributions to the fields of oncology and medical writing. His seminal work, The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, published in two thousand ten, garnered the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in two thousand eleven, along with the Guardian First Book Award. This influential book was also recognized by Time magazine as one of the 'All-Time 100 Nonfiction Books' in two thousand eleven.

Following his acclaimed debut, Mukherjee released The Gene: An Intimate History in two thousand sixteen, which was celebrated as one of The New York Times' 100 best books of that year and was a finalist for prestigious awards such as the Wellcome Trust Prize and the Royal Society Prize for Science Books. His scholarly achievements were further acknowledged when he received the Lewis Thomas Prize in two thousand nineteen.

After completing his secondary education in India, Mukherjee pursued biology at Stanford University, later earning a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and an M.D. from Harvard University. In two thousand nine, he joined the New York–Presbyterian Hospital / Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, where he currently serves as an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Mukherjee is a prominent writer for The New Yorker and a columnist for The New York Times. He was featured in the Time 100 list of most influential people in two thousand eleven and is recognized as part of a select group of doctor-writers who have significantly influenced public discourse on health. His research focuses on the physiology of cancer cells, immunological therapy for blood cancers, and the discovery of stem cells that form bone and cartilage in the vertebrate skeleton.

In recognition of his contributions to medicine and literature, the government of India honored Mukherjee with the Padma Shri, its fourth highest civilian award, in two thousand fourteen.
