Sidónio Pais

Sidónio Pais, born on May first, eighteen seventy-two, was a multifaceted figure in Portuguese history, known for his roles as a politician, military personnel, mathematician, soldier, diplomat, and university teacher. His political career was marked by significant positions, including serving as prime minister, minister of war, and minister of foreign affairs from nineteen seventeen to nineteen eighteen. He also held the role of minister of finance from nineteen eleven to nineteen twelve, and minister of commerce and public works in nineteen eleven.

His tenure in politics was characterized by controversy, making him one of the most divisive figures in modern Portugal. The renowned writer Fernando Pessoa famously referred to him as the 'President-King,' a moniker that encapsulated his unique approach to governance and has endured through the years.
