Siemowit

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Siemowit

Siemowit, born in the year eight hundred forty-five, is recognized as a pivotal figure in Polish history, being the first ruler of the Piast dynasty. He was the son of Piast the Wheelwright and Rzepicha, and his ascent to leadership marked a significant transition in the governance of the Polans.

In the ninth century, Siemowit was elected Duke of the Polans by the wiec, a traditional assembly, following his father's refusal to assume the role of the legendary Duke Popiel. This decision led to a remarkable legend where Popiel met a grim fate, being devoured by mice in his tower by Gopło lake, a tale that has echoed through the ages.

The chronicles of Gallus Anonymus provide the only historical references to Siemowit, alongside his son Lestek and grandson Siemomysł. These accounts, while limited, highlight the significance of Siemowit in establishing a lineage that would eventually lead to Mieszko I, the first Christian ruler of Poland.
