Sigebert II

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Sigebert II

Sigebert II, born in six hundred and one, was the illegitimate son of Theuderic II, a lineage that would lead him to inherit the kingdoms of Burgundy and Austrasia in six hundred and thirteen. His ascent to the throne was orchestrated by his formidable great-grandmother, Brunhilda, who played a pivotal role in his brief reign.

Under the guidance of Brunhilda, Sigebert was presented before a national assembly by Warnachar, the mayor of the palace of Austrasia. The nobles proclaimed him king over both his father's realms, marking the beginning of a tumultuous period in his young life.

However, the stability of his reign was soon threatened by the invasion of Clotaire II of Neustria. Betrayal loomed as Warnachar and Rado, the mayor of the palace of Burgundy, shifted their allegiance to Clotaire, recognizing him as the rightful regent. This treachery culminated in a confrontation on the Aisne, where Brunhilda and Sigebert faced Clotaire's forces.

Despite their efforts, the situation deteriorated as key allies, including the Patrician Aletheus and Duke Rocco, abandoned Brunhilda's cause. Ultimately, Sigebert and his family were captured at Lake Neuchâtel, leading to their tragic execution on Clotaire's orders. This marked the end of Sigebert's reign and the reunification of Austrasia and Neustria under Clotaire's dominion, solidifying his control over the entire kingdom of the Franks.
