Sigge Parling

Sigge Parling, born on March 26, 1930, was a multifaceted Swedish athlete renowned for his contributions to association football, bandy, and ice hockey. His football career spanned from 1949 to 1965, during which he played for prominent clubs including Djurgårdens IF, IK Sirius, and Gefle IF. Parling was primarily positioned as a left midfielder, known for his rough yet fair playing style, earning him the nickname 'the first Järnkamin' or Iron Stove during his tenure at Djurgården.

Throughout his time with Djurgårdens IF, Parling made an impressive 195 appearances, scoring twelve goals and helping the team secure the Swedish Championship title twice, in 1955 and 1959. His prowess on the field extended to the international stage, where he represented Sweden at the 1958 FIFA World Cup, earning thirty-seven caps for his national team. Notably, he remains the only player from Djurgårdens IF to have played in a World Cup Final.

In addition to his football achievements, Parling also excelled in bandy, clinching the Swedish Bandy Final with IK Sirius in 1961. His diverse athletic career showcased his exceptional talent across multiple sports, solidifying his legacy in Swedish sports history.

Sigge Parling passed away on September 17, 2016, at the age of eighty-six, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as a versatile athlete who made significant contributions to Swedish football and sports.
