Sigi Schmid

Sigi Schmid was a prominent German-American soccer coach and player, born on March 20, 1953, in Tübingen, West Germany. He moved to the United States as a child, where he began his soccer journey. Schmid played college soccer at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1972 to 1975, excelling as a starting midfielder.

After his playing days, Schmid returned to UCLA as a coach from 1980 to 1999, establishing himself as one of the most successful collegiate coaches in history. Under his leadership, the Bruins achieved an impressive record of three hundred twenty-two wins, sixty-three losses, and thirty-three draws. His tenure included sixteen consecutive playoff appearances and national championships in 1985, 1990, and 1997.

In addition to his collegiate success, Schmid made significant contributions to U.S. Soccer throughout the 1990s. He transitioned to Major League Soccer (MLS), coaching teams such as the Los Angeles Galaxy, Columbus Crew, and Seattle Sounders FC. Despite not having played professionally, he holds the record for the most coaching wins in MLS history and received the MLS Coach of the Year Award in both nineteen ninety-nine and two thousand eight.

Schmid's coaching style was characterized by his talent identification and defensive tactics, which garnered acclaim. However, his final seasons with the Galaxy saw a decline in performance, leading to his contract termination. After winning the MLS Cup with Columbus in two thousand eight, he became the first head coach of the expansion Seattle Sounders, guiding them to seven playoff appearances and multiple titles before parting ways in two thousand sixteen. He returned to coach the Galaxy from two thousand seventeen until his passing later that year.
