Sima Zhao

Sima Zhao, born in the year two hundred eleven, was a prominent military general and statesperson during the tumultuous Three Kingdoms period of China. As a regent of the state of Cao Wei, he inherited a legacy of power from his father, Sima Yi, and his older brother, Sima Shi. Sima Zhao adeptly navigated the political landscape, quelling internal dissent and rebellion to maintain control over Wei.

In the year two hundred sixty-three, seizing the opportunity presented by the weakened state of Shu Han, Sima Zhao launched a decisive invasion. This bold move ultimately led to the formal surrender of Emperor Liu Shan, significantly altering the balance of power in favor of Wei. His military prowess and political acumen were instrumental in solidifying Wei's dominance during this era.

As his campaign progressed, Sima Zhao was elevated to the title of Duke of Jin and later styled himself as the King of Jin in two hundred sixty-four. Although he never ascended to the throne, his actions set the stage for his son, Sima Yan, to usurp the Wei throne and establish the Jin dynasty in two hundred sixty-six. Following the establishment of Jin, Sima Yan honored his father posthumously as Emperor Wen of Jin, with the temple name Taizu.

Sima Zhao's legacy is encapsulated in a well-known Chinese idiom, which suggests that his intentions were so transparent that they were common knowledge. This phrase, inspired by his political maneuvers, reflects the perception of his ambition to usurp the throne, a sentiment echoed by Cao Mao, the fourth emperor of Wei, during his failed uprising against Sima Zhao.
