Simon Cameron

Simon Cameron, born on August eighth, seventeen ninety-nine, was a prominent American businessman and politician whose influence spanned over half a century. A native of Maytown, Pennsylvania, he amassed a considerable fortune through ventures in railways, canals, and banking. His political career began as a supporter of James Buchanan, whom he succeeded in the Senate when Buchanan became Secretary of State in eighteen forty-five.

By the 1850s, Cameron had distanced himself from Buchanan and the Democratic Party, emerging as a staunch opponent of slavery. He briefly aligned with the Know Nothing Party before joining the Republican Party in eighteen fifty-six. His political acumen was evident when he won another Senate term in eighteen fifty-seven and played a crucial role in supporting Abraham Lincoln at the Republican National Convention in eighteen sixty.

Lincoln appointed Cameron as his first Secretary of War at the onset of the American Civil War. However, his tenure was marred by allegations of corruption and ineffective management, leading to his demotion to minister to Russia in January eighteen sixty-two. After a brief stint abroad, Cameron returned to the United States, where he revitalized his political machine in Pennsylvania, securing a third Senate term in eighteen sixty-seven.

After a decade in his third term, Cameron resigned, orchestrating the election of his son, J. Donald Cameron, to succeed him. He lived to the age of ninety, and his political machine continued to wield significant influence in Pennsylvania politics for several decades, dominating until the nineteen twenties.
