Swami Sivananda Saraswati, born Kuppuswami on September eighth, eighteen eighty-seven, in Pattamadai, Tamil Nadu, emerged as a prominent figure in the realms of yoga and spirituality. Initially trained in medicine, he served as a physician in British Malaya before embracing a monastic life that would lead him to become a revered yoga guru and a proponent of Vedanta.
In nineteen thirty-six, he founded the Divine Life Society, which became a cornerstone for spiritual seekers. His vision extended further with the establishment of the Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy in nineteen forty-eight, where he dedicated his life to teaching and writing. Over his lifetime, he authored more than two hundred books covering a wide array of topics, including yoga and Vedanta.
Swami Sivananda established the Sivananda Ashram on the banks of the Ganges at Muni Ki Reti, near Rishikesh, where he spent the majority of his life. His teachings and practices have transcended borders, with Sivananda Yoga, propagated by his disciple Vishnudevananda, now practiced worldwide through various Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, which operate independently of the ashrams run by the Divine Life Society.
