Sixto Rodriguez

Sixto Diaz Rodríguez, born on July 10, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, was an American musician whose journey through the music industry is as remarkable as his sound. Initially, his career did not garner much attention in the United States, but unbeknownst to him, his music resonated deeply with audiences in South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. In fact, he became so popular in South Africa that it is believed he sold more records than the legendary Elvis Presley.

For decades, misinformation surrounded Rodríguez, including rumors of his death by suicide shortly after the release of his second album. However, the 1990s brought a turning point when dedicated South African fans embarked on a quest to locate him, leading to a revival of his musical career. This incredible story was captured in the 2012 Academy Award-winning documentary, 'Searching for Sugar Man,' which introduced him to a new generation of fans in his home country.

In recognition of his contributions to music, Rodríguez received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Wayne State University in May 2013. He lived a modest life in Detroit's historic Woodbridge neighborhood, often seen walking the streets featured in the documentary. Despite his fame, he maintained a simple lifestyle, eschewing modern conveniences like a telephone and performing intimate concerts at local bars, such as the Old Miami pub, where he connected with small crowds.
