Smith is perhaps best known for his infamous 'prize soap racket.' In this scheme, he sold bars of soap that contained hidden prize money within their packaging, enticing customers to buy more. However, through clever sleight of hand, he ensured that only his gang members would receive the actual prizes, allowing him to manipulate the market and maximize profits. This clever ruse earned him the nickname 'Soapy.'

The success of his soap racket, along with other scams, enabled Smith to finance three successive criminal empires in Denver, Creede, and Skagway, Alaska. His operations thrived in these regions, showcasing his ability to adapt and exploit opportunities in the burgeoning frontier.

Tragically, Soapy Smith's life came to a violent end during a shootout on Juneau Wharf in Skagway on July eighth, eighteen ninety-eight. His legacy as a cunning and charismatic figure in the world of crime remains a fascinating chapter in the history of the American West.
