Somaly Mam

Somaly Mam, born in 1970, is a prominent Cambodian writer and human rights defender renowned for her unwavering commitment to combating sex trafficking. Her advocacy work began in 1996 and continued until 2014, during which she became a leading voice in the fight against this grave violation of human rights.

In her quest to raise awareness and funds for anti-trafficking initiatives, Mam established the Somaly Mam Foundation. Through her efforts, she garnered significant media attention, appearing on major television programs and speaking at numerous international events, thereby amplifying the plight of trafficking victims.

However, Mam's journey was not without controversy. In 2012 and 2013, allegations surfaced in The Cambodia Daily questioning the veracity of her personal narrative and the stories of abuse she shared. This culminated in a cover story by Newsweek in May 2014, which claimed that Mam had fabricated elements of her story. Following an internal investigation by the Somaly Mam Foundation, she resigned, leading to the foundation's closure in October 2014.

After stepping back from her role, Mam returned to Cambodia briefly before relocating to the United States later that year to pursue new fundraising endeavors. Despite the challenges she faced, her dedication to advocating for the rights of trafficking survivors remains a significant part of her legacy.
