Somchai Wongsawat, born on August thirty-first, nineteen forty-seven, is a prominent Thai politician who made history as the twenty-sixth Prime Minister of Thailand in two thousand eight. His political journey began after a distinguished career in civil service and the judiciary, where he held the esteemed position of Permanent Secretary of Justice in two thousand, appointed by then-Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai.
Following his retirement in two thousand six due to reaching the pensionable age, Somchai entered the political arena after the coup that ousted his brother-in-law, Thaksin Shinawatra. He joined the People's Power Party (PPP), which emerged victorious in the December two thousand seven parliamentary elections, leading him to serve as Minister of Education and Senior Deputy Prime Minister.
Somchai's tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant challenges, including the political turmoil of two thousand eight and the global financial crisis. His government faced scrutiny and ultimately, the PPP was dissolved by the Constitutional Court, resulting in a five-year prohibition from politics for Somchai and other executive members due to allegations of vote-buying linked to Yongyuth Tiyapairat.
