Son Sen, born on June twelfth, nineteen thirty, was a prominent Cambodian Communist politician and military figure. Known as "Brother Number 89," he played a significant role in the Khmer Rouge regime, serving on the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kampuchea from nineteen seventy-four until nineteen ninety-two. His influence extended to overseeing the Party's security apparatus, which included the infamous Santebal secret police and the notorious security prison S-21 at Tuol Sleng.
During the tumultuous period of the late nineteen seventies, Son Sen was implicated in the ordering of the massacre of over one hundred thousand individuals in the Eastern Zone of Cambodia. This dark chapter in history marked a significant point in the Khmer Rouge's brutal campaign against perceived enemies.
In his personal life, Son Sen was married to Yun Yat, who held the position of minister of education and information within the Party. However, their lives took a tragic turn when both he and his family were executed on the orders of Pol Pot during a factional split in the Khmer Rouge in nineteen ninety-seven.
