Sonia Sotomayor

Sonia Sotomayor, born on June 25, 1954, in the Bronx, New York City, is a distinguished American lawyer and jurist. She serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, having been nominated by President Barack Obama on May 26, 2009. Sotomayor made history as the first Hispanic justice and the third woman to hold this esteemed position.

Raised by her mother after the death of her father when she was just nine years old, Sotomayor excelled academically, graduating with high honors from Princeton University in 1976. She furthered her education at Yale Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor in 1979 and served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal. Her career began as an assistant district attorney in New York, followed by a successful private practice starting in 1984.

Sotomayor's judicial career began with her nomination to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York by President George H. W. Bush in 1991, and she was confirmed in 1992. In 1997, President Bill Clinton nominated her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where she authored approximately three hundred eighty opinions over her tenure. She has also contributed to legal education as a professor at both New York University School of Law and Columbia Law School.

Her Supreme Court nomination was confirmed by the Senate in August 2009, and since then, she has been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform and the rights of criminal defendants. Sotomayor is known for her passionate dissents on issues of race and ethnic identity, making significant contributions to landmark cases such as Schuette v. BAMN and Trump v. Hawaii.
