Sonita Alizadeh

Sonita Alizadeh is an Afghan rapper and women's rights activist who has made a significant impact through her music and advocacy. Born in 1996, she has become a powerful voice against the practice of forced marriages, a topic she addresses with raw honesty and creativity.

Her rise to prominence began with the release of her groundbreaking video, "Brides for Sale," where she raps about the harrowing reality of daughters being sold into marriage by their families. This poignant work not only showcased her talent but also served as a personal escape from a marriage her parents were arranging for her.

Living in Iran at the time, where it is illegal for women to sing solo, Alizadeh's courage in creating this video was bolstered by the support of Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami, an Iranian documentary filmmaker. Over three years, Maghami documented Alizadeh's journey, culminating in the film "Sonita," which further amplified her message.

After the video gained traction on YouTube, Alizadeh was approached by the Strongheart Group, which offered her a student visa and financial assistance to pursue her education in the United States. Since relocating, she has continued to advocate for women's rights and has been recognized for her contributions, including being named one of BBC's 100 Women in 2015.
