Sonni Ali

Sonni Ali, also referred to as Si Ali or Sonni Ali Ber, meaning 'the Great', was a pivotal figure in the history of the Songhai Empire. Born in the year fourteen sixty-four, he ascended to the throne as the fifteenth ruler of the Sunni dynasty and reigned until fourteen ninety-two. His leadership marked a significant transformation of the Songhai state from a relatively small entity into a formidable empire.

During his reign, Sonni Ali embarked on ambitious military campaigns that expanded the empire's territory. He is best known for his conquests of key cities such as Timbuktu, Massina, the Inner Niger Delta, and Djenne. These victories not only enhanced the empire's wealth and power but also solidified its status as a major center of trade and culture in West Africa.
