Sooronbay Jeenbekov, born on November sixteenth, nineteen fifty-eight, is a notable Kyrgyz politician and farmer who served as the fifth president of Kyrgyzstan from two thousand seventeen until his resignation in two thousand twenty. His presidency was marked by significant challenges, including widespread protests that ultimately led to his departure from office.
Before ascending to the presidency, Jeenbekov held the position of the eighteenth prime minister of Kyrgyzstan from April two thousand sixteen to August two thousand seventeen. During his tenure as president, he focused on foreign policy and corruption, implementing several judicial reforms aimed at enhancing public trust in the government.
Despite these efforts, Jeenbekov's administration faced increasing organized crime and government corruption, compounded by the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. His government was also criticized for allegedly downplaying electoral fraud during the two thousand twenty parliamentary elections, which sparked the Kyrgyz Revolution and led to his resignation amidst political turmoil.
Jeenbekov was initially expected to continue the policies of his predecessor, Almazbek Atambayev. However, their relationship soured shortly after he took office, culminating in Atambayev's arrest and a significant decline in his influence within Kyrgyz politics. Following Jeenbekov's resignation, Sadyr Japarov succeeded him, briefly serving as both acting president and prime minister before being officially elected in the two thousand twenty-one presidential elections.
