Sophie Deraspe

Sophie Deraspe, born on October twenty-seventh, nineteen seventy-three, is a distinguished Canadian filmmaker whose work spans multiple roles including film producer, screenwriter, director, editor, cinematographer, and television director. She has made significant contributions to the new Quebec cinema movement, gaining recognition for her compelling storytelling and innovative approach to filmmaking.

Among her notable works is the 2015 documentary, The Amina Profile, which delves into the Amina Abdallah Arraf al Omari hoax of two thousand eleven. Deraspe's narrative feature films, such as Missing Victor Pellerin in two thousand six, Vital Signs in two thousand nine, and The Wolves in two thousand fifteen, showcase her versatility and depth as a storyteller.

In two thousand nineteen, she wrote, directed, and shot Antigone, a film inspired by the tragic death of Fredy Villanueva in Montreal. This modern adaptation of Sophocles' play resonated deeply with her, as it explores themes of defiance against the law for a greater cause. Antigone premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Canadian Film and was selected to represent Canada in the Oscars race.
