Sophie Pemberton

Sophie Pemberton, born on February thirteenth, eighteen sixty-nine, was a pioneering Canadian painter who holds the distinction of being British Columbia's first professional woman artist. In an era when female artists faced significant social constraints, Pemberton made remarkable strides in the Canadian art scene. Her talent was recognized in eighteen ninety-nine when she became the first woman to win the prestigious Prix Julian from the Académie Julian for her exceptional portraiture.

Her artistic journey took her beyond the borders of Canada, as she became the first artist from British Columbia to gain international acclaim. In eighteen ninety-seven, her work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, marking a significant milestone in her career. Despite her success abroad, Pemberton's exhibitions in Canada were infrequent, as she spent a considerable part of her life in England, where she showcased her art regularly.

Pemberton's personal life was marked by two marriages, which led to changes in her surname and complicated her visibility as an artist. Nevertheless, she maintained connections to her roots, returning to her hometown of Victoria on occasion to reconnect with family and friends. Notably, she played a crucial role in the early recognition of fellow artist Emily Carr. The two grew up in the same small city, and during a visit to British Columbia in nineteen twenty-one, Pemberton discussed Carr's work with Harold Mortimer-Lamb. This conversation ultimately led to an invitation for Carr's work to be featured in a West Coast Art exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in nineteen twenty-seven.
