Sophie Scholl

Sophie Scholl, born on May ninth, nineteen twenty-one, was a courageous German university student and a prominent anti-Nazi political activist. Raised in a politically aware family, she initially became a member of the Bund Deutscher Mädel, the female branch of the Hitler Youth. However, as she matured, her views shifted dramatically, leading her to become a vocal critic of the Nazi regime.

Influenced by philosophical and theological ideas, as well as the writings of Theodor Haecker, Sophie joined her brother Hans and fellow students in the White Rose, a non-violent resistance group. This group was dedicated to opposing the oppressive Nazi state through the distribution of leaflets that articulated ethical and philosophical arguments against its policies.

In February nineteen forty-three, Sophie and Hans were apprehended by the Gestapo while distributing these leaflets at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. Following a harrowing interrogation, they were subjected to a show trial overseen by Roland Freisler, where they were convicted of high treason. The siblings were sentenced to death and executed by guillotine shortly thereafter.

After her execution, the Allies air-dropped copies of the final White Rose leaflet over Germany, ensuring that Sophie Scholl's message of resistance would reach a wider audience. In the years that followed, her legacy has been honored through the naming of numerous schools, streets, and memorials in her and her brother's memory, as well as through various films and books, including the Oscar-nominated film 'Sophie Scholl – The Final Days.'
