Sophie Wilmès, born on January fifteenth, nineteen seventy-five, is a prominent Belgian politician and economist. She made history as the first woman to serve as the Prime Minister of Belgium from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty, and later as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from two thousand twenty to two thousand twenty-two. A dedicated member of the Reformist Movement, Wilmès has been a significant figure in Belgian politics.
Her political journey began when she was elected to the Chamber of Representatives in two thousand fourteen. She held the position of budget minister in both the first and second governments of Charles Michel from two thousand fifteen to two thousand nineteen. Following the federal elections in two thousand nineteen, she was appointed by Philippe of Belgium to lead a caretaker government, known as the Wilmès I Government, before establishing the Wilmès II Government in March two thousand twenty to address the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In October two thousand twenty, Wilmès joined the government of Prime Minister Alexander De Croo as the foreign minister and deputy prime minister. However, she made the difficult decision to resign in two thousand twenty-two to care for her husband, who was battling brain cancer. Her commitment to public service and her family exemplifies her character.
In June two thousand twenty-four, she was elected as a Member of the European Parliament, where she currently serves as one of the Vice-Presidents, continuing her impactful career in European politics.
