Sophronius III of Constantinople

Sophronius III of Constantinople, born in 1798, was a prominent Eastern Orthodox priest whose ecclesiastical journey left a significant mark on the Christian community. He served as the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 1863 to 1866, a period during which he navigated the complexities of church leadership in a time of great change.

On May 30, 1870, Sophronius was elected as the Greek Patriarch of Alexandria, taking on the name Sophronius IV. His tenure in Alexandria was notable for the establishment of the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Port Said in 1888, a testament to his commitment to expanding the church's presence and influence.

However, his time as patriarch was not without controversy. His administration was marked by the unfair expulsion of Nectarios of Aegina, a decision that would later be viewed in a different light as Nectarios was elevated to sainthood. Sophronius IV's leadership came to an end with his death on August 22, 1899, leaving behind a complex legacy within the Orthodox Church.
