Sopiko Guramishvili

Sopiko Guramishvili, born on January first, nineteen ninety-one, is a distinguished chess player, author, and commentator with dual Georgian and Dutch nationality. She holds the prestigious titles of International Master and Woman Grandmaster, showcasing her exceptional skills on the chessboard. Guramishvili has represented Georgia throughout most of her career, achieving remarkable milestones such as being the under-16 girls' World Youth Champion and the under-18 girls' Georgian national champion.

Beginning her chess journey at the tender age of five, Guramishvili quickly made her mark in the competitive arena. By the age of ten, she was regularly qualifying for the World Youth Chess Championships. Her accolades include a silver medal in the under-12 girls' division in two thousand three and a gold medal in the under-16 girls' division in two thousand six. At seventeen, she first qualified for the Georgian Women's Chess Championship, where she notably finished joint second in two thousand nine, earning a WGM norm.

In two thousand nine, at just eighteen years old, Guramishvili was awarded the WGM title, followed by the IM title in two thousand twelve at the age of twenty-one. Her impressive performance at the 2011 Nakhchivan Open, where she defeated Ukrainian Grandmaster Sergey Fedorchuk, solidified her status as a formidable competitor. Guramishvili has consistently excelled at the European Individual Women's Chess Championship, achieving a double IM norm in two thousand ten and qualifying for the Women's World Chess Championship knockout tournament in two thousand thirteen and two thousand fifteen.

Her remarkable journey continued at the 2017 Women's World Championship, where she eliminated higher-seeded Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, advancing to the round of sixteen. Guramishvili's peak tournament performance ratings were recorded in two thousand sixteen, with a career-best of two thousand five hundred nine at the Tata Steel Tienkamp. Beyond her competitive achievements, she has contributed to the chess community by developing online courses and instructional videos, particularly for chess24, where she co-hosts a series with fellow IM Anna Rudolf.

In addition to her instructional work, Guramishvili served as an official commentator for the 2014 World Chess Championship match. She is married to Anish Giri, a renowned Dutch Grandmaster who has reached a world ranking as high as three.
