Sotirios Versis

Sotirios Versis, born in 1876 in Athens, was a distinguished Greek athlete known for his prowess in weightlifting, discus throwing, and shot putting. Coming from a wealthy family, he received his education at the Commercial Academy and later pursued a career as a stockbroker, all while being affiliated with Panellinios G.S.

Versis made his Olympic debut at the inaugural modern Games in 1896, held in his hometown of Athens. He showcased his talents in three events: two in weightlifting and one in athletics. On April 6, he competed in the discus throw, achieving a distance of twenty-seven point seventy-eight meters, which earned him a commendable third place behind American Robert Garrett and fellow Greek Panagiotis Paraskevopoulos.

The following day, Versis participated in two weightlifting events. In the two-hand lift, he successfully lifted ninety kilograms, securing third place due to his superior lifting style, trailing only behind Viggo Jensen and Launceston Elliot. However, in the one-hand lift, he managed to lift only forty kilograms, finishing fourth among four competitors.

Four years later, Versis returned to the Olympic arena at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, where he competed solely in the shot put event. Unfortunately, he was unable to register any distance in his three attempts, preventing him from advancing to the finals.

After concluding his athletics career, Versis ventured into shooting, participating in the 1912 Panhellenic Games. His life came to an untimely end in 1919, as he succumbed to what was reported as Asian Influenza.
