From eighteen fifty to eighteen seventy-eight, Baird served as the assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian, later ascending to the position of Secretary from eighteen seventy-eight until eighteen eighty-seven. Under his stewardship, the natural history collections grew exponentially, from a mere six thousand specimens to over two million by the time of his passing.

In addition to his curatorial work, Baird was appointed as the U.S. Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries, a role he held from eighteen seventy-one to eighteen eighty-seven. His prolific output included the publication of more than one thousand works, reflecting his deep commitment to the study and understanding of the natural world.
