Sponsianus

Sponsianus, also referred to as Sponsian, is a figure shrouded in mystery, believed to have been a Roman usurper during the tumultuous third century. His existence is primarily inferred from a collection of coins that bear his name, which were discovered in a hoard unearthed in the eighteenth century. Despite the absence of any mention of him in ancient texts, the coins have sparked considerable debate among historians and numismatists.

Initially dismissed by many as the product of modern forgery, a study published in November twenty twenty-two examined the wear marks on these coins and concluded that they were indeed authentic. This finding has reignited interest in Sponsianus as a potential historical figure, although the study's methodology and conclusions have faced scrutiny from various scholars.

Those who advocate for the historicity of Sponsianus often place him within the context of the Crisis of the Third Century, particularly in the unstable province of Dacia. The exact timing of his activities remains contentious, with some scholars suggesting he may have declared himself emperor in the 260s, following Dacia's isolation from the Empire, while others propose a later date in the early 270s, after Aurelian's formal abandonment of the province. There are also theories that he could have been active during the reign of Philip the Arab or his son, Philip II.
