Stamata Revithi

Stamata Revithi, born in 1866, was a pioneering Greek marathon runner who made her mark during the historic 1896 Summer Olympics. Despite the exclusion of women from official competition, Revithi was determined to showcase her athletic prowess and insisted on being allowed to run the marathon.

On the day following the men's race, she completed the grueling forty-kilometer course in approximately five hours and thirty minutes. Revithi's remarkable achievement was witnessed by several individuals who signed their names to verify her time. However, her journey was not without obstacles, as she was denied entry into the Panathinaiko Stadium upon finishing her race.

Revithi aimed to present her documentation to the Hellenic Olympic Committee, hoping for recognition of her accomplishment. Unfortunately, the details of her life following this historic run remain shrouded in mystery, with no known records surviving.

Interestingly, contemporary sources mention another woman, referred to as 'Melpomene', who also participated in the marathon. This has led to ongoing debates among Olympic historians regarding the possibility that Revithi and Melpomene may be the same individual.
