In addition to his singles success, Smith formed a formidable partnership with Bob Lutz, creating one of the most successful doubles teams in tennis history. His accolades include winning the inaugural year-end championships title in nineteen seventy and being recognized as the year-end world No. 1 singles player in nineteen seventy-two. He further solidified his legacy by clinching his second year-end championship title at the Dallas WCT Finals in nineteen seventy-three and capturing four Grand Prix Championship Series titles.
