Stede Bonnet, often referred to as the Gentleman Pirate, was born on July twenty-ninth, sixteen eighty-eight, into a wealthy English family on the island of Barbados. Following the death of his father in sixteen ninety-four, he inherited the family estate, which provided him with a comfortable lifestyle. However, in the spring of seventeen seventeen, Bonnet made the audacious decision to abandon his life of privilege and embrace piracy, despite having little sailing experience.
He purchased a vessel named the Revenge and set out with a crew along the Eastern Seaboard of what is now the United States, engaging in acts of piracy by capturing and burning ships. His journey led him to Nassau in the Bahamas, a notorious haven for pirates known as the Republic of Pirates. Unfortunately, Bonnet was seriously injured during an encounter with a Spanish warship on his way to Nassau.
Upon his arrival, he crossed paths with the infamous pirate Blackbeard, who would temporarily take command of Bonnet's ship due to Bonnet's inability to lead his crew effectively. Together, they plundered merchant ships along the East Coast until December of seventeen seventeen, when Bonnet's crew abandoned him for Blackbeard's more formidable ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge. After a brief period as a guest aboard Blackbeard's ship, Bonnet regained command in the summer of seventeen eighteen after receiving a pardon from North Carolina's governor, Charles Eden.
Tempted to return to piracy, Bonnet adopted the alias Captain Thomas and renamed his ship Royal James. In August of that year, he anchored in an estuary of the Cape Fear River for repairs. However, Colonel William Rhett, authorized by South Carolina's governor Robert Johnson, led a naval expedition against Bonnet and his crew. After hours of combat, the outnumbered pirates surrendered, and Bonnet was arrested and taken to Charles Town in early October. Although he managed to escape briefly on October twenty-fourth, he was soon recaptured. On November tenth, he faced trial for piracy and was sentenced to death by Judge Nicholas Trott. Despite pleading for clemency, Bonnet was hanged in Charles Town on December tenth, seventeen eighteen.
