Stefan Sofiyanski, born on November seventh, nineteen fifty-one, in Sofia, is a prominent Bulgarian politician known for his significant contributions to the country's political landscape. He graduated in statistics from the Karl Marx Higher Institute of Economics and held various positions within the Ministry of Communications and Information during the communist era. His political journey began in earnest when he became a leading member of the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) and served in the cabinet of Prime Minister Filip Dimitrov.
In nineteen ninety-five, Sofiyanski was elected as the Mayor of Sofia, a role he would hold for three consecutive terms, being re-elected in nineteen ninety-nine and two thousand three. His tenure as mayor was marked by a commitment to modernizing the city and addressing the needs of its citizens. In nineteen ninety-seven, he was appointed as the caretaker Prime Minister by President Petar Stoyanov, a position he held until a snap election was called.
In two thousand one, Sofiyanski announced his departure from the UDF to establish his own political party, the Union of Free Democrats. Although initially part of the UDF, his party later aligned with the Bulgarian People's Union. His political career took another turn when he joined the European Parliament as one of Bulgaria's interim members on January first, two thousand seven, serving until the elections in May of that year.
Despite his political achievements, Sofiyanski faced criticism in June two thousand eight for his controversial remarks regarding Bulgaria's first gay pride parade. His comments, which reflected a conservative viewpoint on LGBT rights, sparked a significant backlash from human rights advocates, highlighting the ongoing societal debates surrounding these issues in Bulgaria.
