Stefan Vojislav, born in the year nine hundred ninety, was a prominent figure in the history of Duklja, serving as its Prince from one thousand eighteen to one thousand forty-three. His early career began as a Byzantine governor, a role he held until one thousand thirty-four, when he attempted to lead a revolt against Byzantine authority.
This revolt, however, was unsuccessful, resulting in his imprisonment in Constantinople. Despite this setback, Vojislav's resilience shone through as he managed to escape from captivity and return to his homeland.
Upon his return, he successfully achieved the independence of his statelet, marking a significant turning point in his reign. His leadership extended beyond Duklja as he expanded his rule over southern Dalmatia and its hinterland, solidifying his legacy.
Stefan Vojislav is recognized as the eponymous founder of the Vojislavljević dynasty, a testament to his enduring influence in the region.
