Steph Houghton

Stephanie Jayne Darby, known as Steph Houghton, was born on April 23, 1988, in North East England. A former professional footballer, she made her mark as a centre-back, celebrated for her leadership and unwavering commitment on the pitch. Throughout her illustrious career, Houghton earned recognition as one of the finest defenders in women's football.

Houghton's football journey began at Sunderland, where she initially played as a striker before transitioning to midfield and ultimately settling in defence. In 2007, she moved to Leeds Carnegie, clinching the FA Women's Premier League Cup. Her career continued to flourish at Arsenal Ladies, where she secured the FA WSL title twice, along with two FA Women's Cup victories and three FA WSL Cup wins.

On the international stage, Houghton has been a stalwart for the England women's national team since her debut in two thousand seven, amassing over one hundred caps. Despite facing serious injuries before major tournaments, she rebounded to represent her country in the 2011 World Cup and Euro 2013. Appointed England captain in January two thousand fourteen, she led her team at two World Cups and a Women's Euro, earning a bronze medal at the 2015 World Cup.

Houghton also showcased her talent at the Olympic Games, scoring three goals for Great Britain during the 2012 Summer Olympics, including decisive strikes against New Zealand and Brazil. She represented her country again in the 2020 Summer Olympics, further solidifying her legacy in women's football.

In recognition of her contributions to the sport, Houghton was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours. Additionally, she was awarded the Freedom of the City of Sunderland on March eighth, two thousand twenty-three, marking her significant impact both on and off the field.
